Darlene Harris Photography
BIO: Darlene Harris has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts: Magna cum Laude in Geography from Mansfield University. After a four year career as a Parks Naturalist in the Pennsylvania State Parks System, Darlene moved to south Florida in the eighties. She has worked in environmental resource management, education, and consulting for public and private agencies for over 30 years.
Darlene has spent years working outdoors, studying nature, and actively pursing ways to conserve and preserve plant and animal communities. She has held several notable leadership positions in both Civic and Environmental Organizations. She is the Vice President/ Senior Biologist for Earth Advisors, Inc., a position she had held since 1997.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Beginning with and continuing with a Pentax K1000 camera, Darlene has worked to capture nature on film. A major emphasis in this 30+ year process has been given to observing and recording the birds of the Florida Everglades. The goal of this body of work has always been to inspire new insight and appreciation into the nuances of bird's everyday lives and behaviors, and engage humans in the recognition of the sentient purposes of wild birds in their habitats.
"In particular", says Ms. Harris, "I want people visiting the Everglades to develop a sense of the intelligent, thoughtful, and purposeful coexistence animals of the 'Glades have with the human component of their habitats". C.D. Flash, owner of the Wallflower Gallery in Miami, FL which represented the photography of Darlene Harris until its recent closing, said this: "Darlene's photography captures a raw essence of nature that matches her flair for composition. By focusing on the lively features of her animal subjects, Darlene strives to convey the animalistic traits that matches our own humanistic essence."
All images exhibited and for sale by Darlene Harris Photography have not been retouched or enhanced through "Photoshop" or any other artificial enhancements. Her current emphasis is to continue to produce photos that include film images, as well as collecting digital images in a traditional photographic manner without employing computer manipulation.
AIRIE:
Darlene was selected for the Artist in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) program and completed a residency at Everglades National Park in 2005. The Everglades National Park Artist in Residence Program offers artists the opportunity to live and work in the park, and the works completed in this program contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of the Everglades ecosystem. Currently, one of her bird photos has been chosen for an international touring art show sponsored by AIRIE to be on exhibition in 2014.
A brief quote below from the NPS outlines the AIRIE program-
"It is hoped that these works will characterize the Everglades for present and future generations, giving park visitors and the general public an opportunity to see our heritage through the eyes, and ears of the contributing artists."
